Walking into a martial arts gym for the first time can be intimidating. You might be wondering what to wear, whether you'll be thrown around by experienced grapplers, or if you're even fit enough to start. The truth is, every single black belt was once a nervous beginner standing exactly where you are now. Here's everything you need to know before your first Brazilian Jiu Jitsu class in Melbourne.

Before You Arrive

You don't need any prior martial arts experience to start BJJ. Most gyms, including Nakama BJJ in Keilor East, welcome complete beginners in their fundamentals classes. Here's what to bring:

  • Clothing: A rash guard or fitted T-shirt and board shorts or athletic leggings. Avoid anything with zips, buttons, or pockets that could catch fingers.
  • Hygiene essentials: Trimmed fingernails and toenails, a towel, and a water bottle. Good hygiene is a core part of BJJ culture.
  • An open mind: You won't remember every technique on day one, and that's perfectly fine.

You don't need to buy a gi (the traditional BJJ uniform) straight away. Most beginners start with no-gi classes, and your coach can advise you on when to invest in one.

The Warm-Up

Every class begins with a warm-up designed to get your body moving in ways specific to grappling. Expect exercises like hip escapes (shrimping), forward and backward rolls, and light jogging. These movements might feel awkward at first, but they form the foundation of your BJJ movement vocabulary. Don't worry about getting them perfect; everyone improves with repetition.

The Technique Portion

After warming up, your coach will demonstrate two or three techniques. In a beginner-friendly class, this might include a basic guard pass, a sweep from bottom position, or a simple submission like an armbar. You'll then pair up with a training partner and drill the technique repeatedly.

This is where BJJ really shines as a martial art for all body types. Technique and leverage matter far more than size or strength. Your training partners will help you through each step, and the coaching team will circulate to offer individual corrections.

Positional Sparring and Rolling

Towards the end of class, you may be introduced to positional sparring — controlled practice starting from a specific position. This lets beginners apply what they've just learned without the intensity of a full sparring round (known as "rolling" in BJJ). Many gyms won't have brand-new students roll on their very first day, so there's no pressure to spar before you're ready.

When you do start rolling, remember: it's okay to tap early and tap often. Tapping is how you signal your partner to release a submission, and it's a sign of smart training, not weakness.

What About Fitness?

One of the most common concerns we hear is "I want to get fit before I start." The reality is that BJJ is the fitness programme. Grappling builds cardiovascular endurance, grip strength, core stability, and flexibility simultaneously. Your first few sessions will be tiring, but your body adapts quickly. Within a few weeks, you'll notice significant improvements in your stamina and overall fitness.

The Culture and Community

BJJ gyms tend to have a strong sense of community. At Nakama BJJ, we use the Japanese concept of nakama — meaning close companions who share a common goal. You'll find that training partners quickly become friends, and the supportive atmosphere makes it easier to push through the initial learning curve.

The etiquette is straightforward: be respectful, listen to your coach, and look after your training partners. Most importantly, leave your ego at the door. Everyone is there to learn and improve together.

After Your First Class

You'll probably feel a mix of exhaustion and excitement. It's normal to be sore the next day — muscles you didn't know you had will make themselves known. Give yourself adequate rest between sessions in the first couple of weeks, and don't hesitate to ask questions about anything you're unsure of.

Many students find that BJJ quickly becomes more than just a hobby. The problem-solving nature of grappling, combined with the physical workout and social connection, creates something genuinely addictive.
